Crowborough Beacon Golf Club
Crowborough Beacon Golf Club, by embracing a modern and innovative approach to membership, has made it possible for a wider variety of golfers to enjoy the magnificent golf course which enjoys one of the most spectacular locations in the country. Flexible Membership gives the opportunity for those with precious little spare time to enjoy the benefits of membership of such a prestigious golf club. Over 120 local golfers are now enjoying the opportunity to play, even if only occasionally, as Flexible Members and participate and compete alongside Full members as time and opportunity permits, at a fraction of the cost of full membership.
The real success of the Flexible scheme has allowed the Club to reduce its Full subscription for the second year running. Whilst prices for almost everything rise across the whole Country, the Club has managed to buck the economic trend and reduce fees from £1188 in 2011, to £1100 in 2013.
A further membership option at Crowborough Beacon is County Membership. A radical new approach to the traditional, long-standing Country Membership which historically had a qualifying radius of beyond 30 miles – as the crow flies. If you live 15 road miles or further from Crowborough Beacon then this membership category has been designed with you in mind.
If golf isn’t really your ‘thing’, Social Membership is available for local residents if you’re looking for relaxing surroundings to have a quiet meal and a drink, and enjoy the terrace view once described as “I do not suppose there is a wider or more beautiful one in all England”. An active social section arranges events throughout the year and the Club has facilities available to hire for meeting rooms, private functions or parties.
There has been a long-held myth amongst many local people that the Golf Club, now ranked by GOLF WORLD magazine as the 70th best course in England, remains an exclusive, mysterious place, not open to all. Nothing, in fact, could be further from the truth as the Golf Club became a Community Amateur Sports (CASC) Club many years ago. CASC Clubs are open to all sections of the community and their club's membership policies ensure that the primary purpose of the club is the promotion of its sport and to ensure the club is operating in a modern manner. The core purpose of CASC Clubs is promoting their sport, providing opportunities for sporting activity, non-profit-making and amateur, rather than as a commercial company run purely for profit.
Founded in 1895, the Club’s membership included famous faces and pillars of the local community, and, as a result, an ‘elitist’ reputation and on occasions a negative rapport within the local community. Now, any remaining myths surrounding Crowborough Beacon regarding membership and attitude are entirely unfounded. The De La Warr Artisans Club was integrated with the main Club way back in 1980 and in recent years, a significant change to relax an out of date dress code was introduced, to reflect modern society. The Golf Club’s charitable activities have, over the years supported a wide variety of local and national charities raising approaching £200k over the last 20 years, funding Beacon the Guide Dog and an extraordinary £18k raised for Barnardo’s and Crowborough Hospital in 2012.
