A membership of Crowborough Beacon Golf Club appeals to different people in different ways, primarily due to the enormous variety of motivations that may lead someone to join this great Club.
As it ventures into and beyond its 125th year, a prospective member of Crowborough Beacon may be enticed by its history, fascinated by walking in the footsteps of Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle, Club Captain in 1910, or relishing the challenge of the traditional heathland golf course, influenced by legendary golf course Architects, Harry S. Colt and Dr. Alister MacKenzie.
The golf course still bears the hallmarks of the two aforementioned masters of their trade, and benefits to this day by remaining a tremendously respected golf course across the Country, currently ranked at 72nd in England, a significant draw for the discerning golfer. Whilst the traditional heathland golf course offers a significant challenge to the experienced and lower handicap golfer, with its dense heather and lengthy carries, a fully measured shorter course, named after Sir Arthur, offers juniors and beginners the opportunity to find their feet whilst enjoying the same majestic scenery.
Speaking of the views, Bernard Darwin penned in 1926, “The first thing that will strike the golfer who comes fresh to Crowborough is the wonderful view. I do not suppose there is a wider or more beautiful one in all England”. And how correct he was, and still is in fact, with views from the recently modernised Terrace stretching far and wide to the sea some 26 miles away.
And if not the extensive history, the exceptional heathland golf course or the spectacular views, then perhaps it is the enormously warm welcome and community feel that draws people to Crowborough Beacon. A vast and inclusive golfing calendar encourages all members of all ages and abilities to take part on the course and a full and entertaining social schedule keeps members entertained in and around the Clubhouse.
