The 12th hole is unique at Crowborough as almost the only entirely flat hole from tee to green, with the exception of a severe area of deep cross rough at about 260 yards from the back tee. This depression, filled with deep heather and gorse, presents a problem for the longer striker as the cross rough must be avoided at all costs and in the summer the fast-running fairway will make it tricky to lay up too close.
The hole sits against a backdrop of a tree-lined fairway which enjoys a spectacular view when the gorse is in flower both in the cross rough and surrounding the hole. The cross rough is at about 150 yards to a green
that is reasonably flat on the front half rising up a slope to the rear.
The hole offers a reasonably intimidating drive with the fairway bounded by grass or heather rough with mature woodland along the left-hand side and tall impenetrable gorse along the right. All things considered, this is a very worthy Stroke Index 2.
